PROJECT STATEMENT:
Nightlife, to me, is fundamental for my relationships, my sanity, my growth and my understanding of myself as well as those around me. When deciding on my major project, I contemplated a multitude of themes, switching between mediums and subjects. I feel my past finals have all been relatively similar therefore I wanted to step outside my comfort zone and do something completely different. Capturing sweet and intimate moments seemed exciting to me; personal. As going out and experiencing nightlife is so popular among me and my friends, I felt this would be a perfect opportunity to explore how nightlife has shifted and developed since covid. Due to Victoria going back into lockdown at the beginning of the semester, my theme had to be broadened, instead of just nightlife, I was going to be capturing all intimate moments in my life, within my relationships, regardless of day or night. I decided to create GIFs(moving images) as this is something I haven't tried before and something that I feel captures moments more intimately and effectively. I've always loved using older mediums like film and It was important to me that I filmed as many people and as much content as possible because I wanted to capture all of the moments, not just the exciting ones. I used a really old video camera that I received as a gift from when I was a child; I wanted to create a sense of nostalgia - a series of gifs that brings comfort and reminds the audience of their childhood, their intimate moments, their memories. The grid I have created, encompasses many moments throughout the semester, from peak lockdown up to the first week the dance floors opened up. These gifs are a reflection of the joy and love I received from all those closest to me, from the morning to the night and capture the essence of freedom, despite restrictions still being in place. I collated the videos with the most authentic displays of emotion, genuinity was imperative for my final. I find all of these gifs sum up my semester in a provocative yet engaging way and give the audience a sneak peak into my world and those who I’m grateful are in it.
